Civil Defence Corps peacetime uses

Since we didn't have a Nuclear War,
what did the Civil Defence Corps actually do?

CDC and WVS helped in numerous local incidents, frequently when there were floods and severe storms. The CDC also meant that there were more people around who had first aid training which was put in use dealing with accidents in the home, at work or in the community.
